(Solved) - No internet connection after re-installing Windows XP Pro SP3
(26 posts)How To Install Local Area Connection Driver
Hey.
I finally finished re-installing Win XP Pro SP3 32-bit on my computer, and that went just fine. I actually made my own CD with nLite. And i used the same drivers as before (i just copied all of them with a program called DriverMax).
Can anyone help me out? It just doesn't work. I've tried setting up all new kinds of connections, but it wont work. :( I've also tried ipconfig /renew, but no luck there either.
Right now i'm using a broadband (i think!?). I've got a plug in my wall with a wire that goes into my switch, and from there there is a cable that goes right into my computer (and some other cables to other computers too). I usually never have problems with this, but when i do, i really get stuck :/
The installation went just fine, no errors at all. And the computer seems to be running just as it should, exept the internet connection...
Check out this screenshot. It says i'm connected, but i can't connect :S
Thanks in advance.

IE says, 'the address is not valid', and it isn't. It says http:///login.hitnet and so on with three slashes. Anyway, I assume that you have tried some other sites.
The other thing that I find unusual is the 1394 network adapter. That's very rare. What kind of system is this, make and model?
Also, please tell us everything you can about the internet connection. The cable from the wall is it a telephone cable or TV coax? What is the make and model of the modem or router or whatever is connected to this cable?
Can you ping any sites?
Click Start -->Run then type CMD
at the DOS prompt type:
ping www.yahoo.com
You should see something like this:

Yes i have tried different websites too, still no luck :/

I don't really know much about the connection at all. I do know it's a telephone cable. It's the same kind of plug i have plugged in into my computer.
The cable from the wall goes right into our switch, and from there there is a cable that goes into my computer (and some other computers in my house, and btw, it's just my internet that isn't working. Everybody else's is working!)

I was going to show you some pics of the modem and wires etc, but i can't get any good pics with my phone. (to blurry)
It does say 'TOPCOM TSH-205' on it. Oh and look what i found on google: :D
http://www.topcom.sk/fiche.asp?style=communication&p=TSH205&groep=64
And no, i can't ping any sites. It says it can't find the hostname. And if i try 'ipconfig /all' it just says 'Windows IP Configuration', and nothing else.

Well the reference to Topcom TSH-205 set bells ringing in my head. Turns out, we have discussed this device before in this old thread. You seemed to know more about the switch back then.
If I understand your setup correctly, it should be ethernet cable going from the wall to the switch and from the switch to the PC. This is not the same as phone cable. See this networking guide that shows the symbol for an ethernet port, the difference between an ethernet connector and a phone connector, and other good information.
So, if we really are dealing with ethernet connections, then you still have the problem that your network connections, from the screen shot above, has a 1394 connection, but not a Local Area Connection. It's even more bizarre that Windows sees the 1394 connection as 'connected'. Is there something plugged into the 1394 port?
Here is some more information about your Internet connection that you wrote in another old thread.
Back then, when i posted those posts, i actually thought it was a router, which it isn't.
Anyways...
'If I understand your setup correctly, it should be ethernet cable going from the wall to the switch and from the switch to the PC.'
Yes that's correct. (thanks for the link, i'll read more about that later!)
'Is there something plugged into the 1394 port?' What exactly do you mean by that?
And what is the 1394 connection used for? Shouldn't i just have a Local Area connection instead?
See this page at HP about your motherboard. It includes a picture, Figure 3, that points to the IEEE 1394 port, item 4. Is there a cable connected to that port?
A 1394 connection can be used for many different purposes, just as USB can. It is possible to connect to a network over 1394, but that's very rare. If you don't have a network connected to the 1394 port, then there should be no '1394 Connection' in the Windows Network Connections panel. I expect that your network is coming over the ethernet cables so then you should have a 'Local Area Connection' instead of a 1394.
Since you have other PCs connected to the same switch, take a look at the settings of another one that is running XP.
No there isn't.
My moms computer (which i'm using right now) has both a 1394 connection and a Local Area connection. it says that both of them are Connected.
That's strange. Obviously you can't be connected to a wired network when there is no cable plugged in! I'm not sure why it says 'connected' but being connected to an empty port is not very useful.
Use the New Connection Wizard to create a Local Area Network connection for the ethernet adapter. I would recommend that you disable the 1394 connection, otherwise Windows might try to use it and that would just slow you down waiting for it to timeout.
Alright. But when i try to make a new connection i get this window. What should i choose?
'Connect to the Internet'
'Setup my connection manually'
'Connect using a broadband connection that is always on'
'Setup my connection manually'
'Connect using a broadband connection that is always on'
Thanks. I'll try that as soon as i get time... i'm going away for the day and will get home pretty late, so i'll probably do it tomorrow morning. I'll post back here with the results.
:)
This is the result:
I didn't get a new connection. Still not working :/
Did you disable the 1394 Connection? The new connection wizard didn't create a Local Area Connection?
What does your Network Connections windows show now?
Yes i did disable the 1394 connection. (and the wireless) And no it didn't create anything new.
Screenshot:
Also, just to make sure it wasn't the cable that was broken... i tried to plug it out and then plug it in again. If i'm not wrong, you usually get a little balloon tip in the system tray saying a new cable is plugged in (or something similar), but i don't get it now. Nothing happens when i plug it in/out.
If i can't solve this today, i'm gonna have to install my old Windows XP CD again. The old one always works, but i have to wait like 500 years to finish all the updates etc... And that's a SP2 disk (i think).
Could this be a driver problem? I seriously doubt it is, cause as i said in the first post, i copied all the drivers from my old OS to my new CD. Maybe some of the drivers didn't install correctly? Is there a way to check that?
And... nite asked before if i could ping any websites. No, i can't, but i can ping my own computer (127.0.0.1) with results.
Next thing to check is the ethernet adapter. In order to create a new network connection, there needs to be an adapter to bind it to.
Go to Device Manager and look for any yellow '?', red 'X', or '!' symbols. If it's all good, check under Network Adapters where you should see the adapters that we know about, the 1394 Net adapter and the Atheros Wireless adapter. There should be a third adapter that represents the wired ethernet. Check the Properties for that adapter to insure that it is enabled, that it's working, and that there are no resource conflicts or any other obvious weirdness.
Ok. I went there, and under Network Adapters there are two items (look in the screenshot below), which both have red X's on them. All other items are just fine. The reason they have red X's on them is because both of the connections i have are disabled. If i enable the adapters, the connections are also enabled.
I finally got some good news :D
I know i copied all of the drivers from the computer before... but for some reason the ethernet driver didn't install correctly.
So i googled for the drivers and within ~5 min i had them downloaded and installed on my computer. Woala, it's working! I have a Local Area connection, and i'm connected to the internet. As a matter of fact, i'm actually posting this comment from MY computer :D

I appreciate all your help so insanely much!
Even tho i just got it working, i think i'm going to make a new CD again, but with new, working drivers.
Have a nice day, i know i will :)
That's good news, alright. I'm glad that you got it fixed. I'm curious, though, what kind of ethernet adapter is it? I don't see it in your Device Manager window and was kind of expecting a big yellow '?' symbol for an Unknown Device.
Yep :)
Well, after installing the drivers i got a new adapter called 'NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller' and a new connection called 'Local Area Connection'.
This is what i installed:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_winxp32_8.26_11.09.html
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_winxp32_8.26_11.09.html
And btw, i added the new drivers to a new CD and installed it... it's working great ;D
Aha. That makes sense. The ethernet 'adapter' is integrated into the motherboard chipset (nForce), so the ethernet driver is included in the motherboard driver package.
Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.

I also have a emachines w3052, just re-loaded windows xo pro onto it, have no network connections showing up, shows a working ethernet adapter, but in the PCI simple communications device i have a yellow ?, does that device have anything to do with the network card? I downloaded a package of drivers from emachines, but that did not seem to reslove anything. Any help would be appreciated
